Unique Fishing Technique

Jeremy Wade has been known to travel the world trying all types of unique fishing techniques to catch massive fish. This is one technique that really tests Jeremy. Noodling is a technique in which you have to bait the fish with your bare hand. The goal is to get the fish to bite your hand so that you can grip them and bring them to the surface. This technique is used to catch catfish, and in this episode Jeremy is able to noodle a 53 pound Flathead catfish. This was enough to help him win a local tournament.

Top Goals from the NHL season

Despite the lack of action in sports these past few months, the NHL season that we had in the winter provided plenty of highlights for us to reflect on. In this series from the NHL, we are counting down the top 50 NHL goals of the 2019-2020 season so far. Today, we see numbers 30-21, with Connor McDavid showing off his speed and hands in not one, but two appearances. But first, we kick things off with a nifty between the legs goal by William Nylander.

1104.2 LBS

With the largest live crowd of any lift performed in Strongman, Hafthor Bjornsson did not disappoint. Making the lift look easy, he takes the deadlift world record performed in a suit and with straps from pro strongman Eddie Hall. The lift surpasses Hall’s record by a mere 2.2 pounds (or 1 kg), but the ease that it was pulled with left no doubt in viewers minds. In building up to the lift, Hafthor took attempts at 420kg, and 465 kg, which were both smooth lifts. The 501kg pull was very fast off of the ground, and there was a small struggle at the lockout, but overall it looks like there may have been a few pounds he could have added to the bar.

Greenland Shark

Jeremy Wade has made a career out of identifying and catching rare species of fish. In this episode he travels to Loch Ness to catch a fierce predator that we know very little about. The Greenland Shark is one of the largest living species of shark growing to about 20 feet and weighing around 1,000KG. This shark also has the longest life span of any vertebrate estimated between 300 and 500 years. Jeremy was lucky enough to hook into one and jump in the water to examine the creature.

Is the Scoring Record Within Reach

Prior to the ongoing crisis, all eyes were on Alexander Ovechkin as he made his run to the 700 career goals club, a feat only realized by 7 other players in the leagues history. All- time goal scorer and point leader Wayne Gretzky, sit down to discuss the scoring records as well as their respective Stanley Cup winning experiences. Ovechkin has been a consistently productive scorer throughout his career and is not showing any signs of slowing down. He has seven 50-goal seasons, and scored 48 so far in 68 games played before this season was paused. He has a proven ability score in many different ways that make it hard for opponents to adapt. Regardless of whether or not Ovechkin will be able to reach his scoring record, the overall point record seems insurmountable.

501 KG

Top strongman Hafthor Bjornsson, will be taking a crack at the all-time world record deadlift performed by Eddie Hall at 500 KG. There is a lot of speculation around this record attempt being that Hafthor will be judged from the comfort of his home gym. Due to the ongoing crisis with COVID-19, the original plans to attempt the record in official competition in Dubai will not be possible. Despite the criticism that has ensued from the powerlifting/strongman community regarding whether or not this should be deemed a legit record, there is no doubt that Hafthor is prepared to handle this kind of weight. In this video we see him pull 470 KG with ease, in a suit and with straps. He plans on beating the record by just 1 KG on May 2nd.

Scene Analysis (8:52-11:10)

https://archive.org/details/THX-1138_Original_Cut.mkv

Although a little bit short, this scene, in my opinion is the most powerful in setting the stage for the film and giving the audience an idea of the type of governance that runs this society.  The main character appears to enter into some sort of confession room. Where he talks about how he doesn’t believe that the medications he’s taking are “working” and that he just doesn’t feel right.”  We would later see this character rebel and commit several crimes for which he does knowingly.  You can see in the characters face and his body language that he is genuinely confused and wants to fix what he believes is a problem.  Inside the confession room they have placed a device with pre-recorded responses which are randomly generated to comfort the confessor.  Originally one may have thought that these responses were done in real time by another person.  Upon listening further, we hear many of the exact same responses played in the same tone.  In some cases, the responses aren’t even appropriate responses.  Regardless, we still see a confused man who has been conditioned to believe he is talking to another person who is actively listening and responding accordingly.  Many of the responses also seem to serve as “brainwashing” to an extent.  One of the responses says, “let us be thankful that we have an occupation” and further goes on to tell him to “work hard and prevent accidents.”  We can also see where governance has created a layer between them and society.  Using automation to interact with people such as in this case, and with law enforcement limits the ability of people to see what is actually going on and discourages people from rising up against this government.  The medications eluded to in this person’s confession are used to direct emotions.  People are expected to take medication so that they can control their feelings and act in a manner that is deemed appropriate by this government.  Through forms of punishment, people are coerced into believing that they must abide by these laws and rely on supplied medications to direct their emotions.  The restriction of freedom is well represented in the lack of individualism throughout the film.  Every person has the same clothes and haircut and the building itself is very bland.  This adds to the overall theme which suppresses creativity and any kind of thinking that deviates from the standard tasks that they are given.

Dystopia

https://archive.org/details/THX-1138_Original_Cut.mkv

Greg Lucas’ film seemingly depicts a dystopian society where the governing party exerts totalitarian control over civilians.  We see people all dressed in the same white clothing and haircut, given a occupation, which seems to be their sole purpose.  The uniformity of those within this dystopia adds to the bleak nature of this society.  The music is very strange and adds an element of uneasiness for the viewers.  The use of robots as a form of law enforcement shows a disconnect, or an added layer between civilians, and those governing them.  This is a key element to the film because it shows just how removed people are from what is going on.  With that, there is no exposure outside of the building throughout the film until the main character makes his escape.  We get the sense that these people are physically trapped and heavily monitored.   Not only are they physically trapped, but they are mentally trapped as well.  People are shown taking a combination of medications which appear to serve the purpose of altering their emotions and likely protects the government from people rebelling.  Characters can be seen periodically throughout the film playing around with different combinations in order to balance their mind into feeling the way that they have been told to feel.  In the beginning of the film the governing party discusses “illegal sexual activity” indicating that civilians are restricted in their freedoms.  There is a scene where the two main characters share an intimate moment and are in fear that “they (governing party) are watching.”  The governing party considered this to be negative behavior and determined that those involved had some sort of chemical imbalance, which they tried to treat using medication and bizarre forms of treatment.  As for the presentation of the film, I found it a little bit hard to follow.  The beginning could do a better job of setting the scene for the rest of the film.  There were a lot of jump cuts to new scenes that made it difficult to determine what had happened between scenes and how certain characters got to new places.  I really liked the older film style because it added to the sci-fi feel of the film.  Additionally, I believe that the music was well chosen and placed to enhance the viewers understanding of the mood at any given point in the film and complemented the characters very well.
